Buffalo herds exhibit a defense mechanism called “collective defense.” When a predator, such as lions or hyenas, threatens the herd, the buffalo form a tight circle or line, with the adults surrounding the younger and more vulnerable individuals in the center. This formation, known as a “buffalo wall of defense,” presents a united front against the predator. The adults use their powerful horns and sheer size to fend off attackers, while the younger ones remain protected within the safety of the herd. This collective defense strategy demonstrates the strength, unity, and resilience of buffalo herds and increases their chances of survival in the face of danger.
