Where ice and sea entwine

Jökulsárlón is not an isolated lagoon; it has a narrow outlet to the ocean. The lagoon is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a short river called Jökulsá River, which carries the meltwater and icebergs from the lagoon to the sea. As the icebergs float out to sea, they may get washed back onto the black sand beach nearby, creating a striking contrast against the dark volcanic sands. This beach is known as Diamond Beach or Breiðamerkursandur and is adorned with glistening ice sculptures. The interaction between Jökulsárlón and the ocean creates a dynamic ecosystem and a stunning spectacle of ice meeting the waves, adding to the allure and ever-changing beauty of this natural wonder.
